Issue No.6, December 2008

SMUAA President’s Message

Dear Fellow Alumni,

The year 2008 was an eventful and fulfilling one in the strengthening of alumni ties with the SMUAA and the university. As the year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the highlights of some of our activities.

The SMUAA held its third Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 12 December 2008. A new Executive Committee, comprising 15 members, was elected for a new term. The new Exco will take office in January 2009.

Of particular note this year is the access to the new University Lounge for all SMUAA members. Located on the 6th level of the Administration Building, the University Lounge is a place where SMUAA members can come to chill out and network.

Following the success of Let's Catch Up @ Raffles Place in the first quarter of the year, an Alumni Reunion-in-the-City was organised in October, with the support of the SMU Office of Alumni Relations. It was a special evening as we also awarded the SMUAA Honorary Alumnus Award to Justice Andrew Phang. (Photos of the reunion can be found here)

Together with the Office of Alumni Relations, the SMUAA organised several social and personal development programmes which proved to be popular among members. These included tennis classes (beginner), business mandarin classes, analytical thinking / consulting skills workshop, and a movie night screening.

Our alumni network continues to grow with the formation of three new alumni groups and an overseas chapter : the Dubai Alumni Chapter, Bondue Alumni Group, and the first postgraduate alumni group, the MWM Alumni Group.

That’s not all. In the New Year, there are some exciting developments to look forward to - a new membership plan as well as a cyber networking platform exclusive to SMU alumni. Do keep a look out for announcements which will be coming up soon.

In the coming year, the SMUAA looks forward to rolling out more exciting activities for alumni to stay in touch and network. Happy holidays to all alumni, friends and the SMU community, and have a good year ahead in 2009.

Kind Regards,

Wong Hur Ming
President
SMU Alumni Association Executive Committee
