Alumni Scholarship Fund

The first SMU Alumni Scholarship was awarded to Nguyen Tue Vy on Patron’s Day on 28 January 2008. A third year student, Vy is a finance and business management major.

Apart from doing well academically, Vy is also active in the SMU community. She participated in the SMU Red Cross as its fundraising officer, AstOrdinary as the Finance Head and was also a member of the E.Y.E Investment Interactive Club. In addition to this, Vy occasionally worked part-time to help defray her education costs.

Although there is no bond attached to the scholarship, Vy has already expressed her intentions to ‘pay it forward’. She has volunteered to assist in alumni activities during her term break.

Mr Wong Hur Ming, President of the SMUAA said, “We are very happy to have Vy as the first recipient of the Alumni Scholarship. The panel was very impressed with her ability to express her passion for SMU and her sound ideas on fostering better connectivity between alumni and SMU stakeholders.”

In the spirit of philanthropy, the SMU Alumni scholarship was established in 2004 by the pioneering batch of SMU alumni and the SMU Alumni Association (SMUAA). By 2007, a total of $100,000 was collected from contributions from alumni, staff and faculty. This amount also attracted a 1:1 matching grant from the government.

Valued at $6,000, the SMU Alumni scholarship is given out to a deserving student every year.
