Nostalgia: Graduates’ Night 2007
28 July 2007, 7.00 PM
Ritz-Carlton Millennia, Singapore

Welcome Speech by Ford Lai
Chairman of Grad Nite 2007 Committee

A very good evening to Prof Hunter, honorable guests, ladies, gentlemen and FRIENDS, welcome to my WEDDING! Oops, I meant Nostalgia 2007.

I would like to share my motivation for organising Nostalgia 2007. During Year Two, it dawned on me that I was never going to be the Valedictorian … by the way, congratulations to Ms Alvina Teh (Ed: 2007 Valedictorian) … so in order for me to make my departing speech, I decided that I had to organise Nostalgia 2007.

Just joking! The only purpose for this event is to let everyone celebrate our graduation together and to end our journey on a happy note.

Ford Lai proposing a toast on Grad Nite 2007.

Friends! We are the special batch that experienced studying at both the Bukit Timah campus and the new City Campus. I am sure that all of us would agree that the new City Campus surpasses the old campus in terms of its technological capabilities and the convenience of its location, but I think all of us still prefer the old campus - our Bukit Timah campus.

I am very fond of the fact that everyone knows everyone in the old campus. I believe that you would be able to say ‘hi’ to someone every 5 minutes as you walk around the old campus. And definitely we are all addicted to the feeling of popularity, the sense of importance of one another in everyone’s hearts.

There were also a lot of memorable events that happened during our time. Good memories like getting an A+, attending some good events which you organized like Patron’s Day, finding your current BF/GF and so on. Also, some examples of bad memories were … sleeping for only 3 hours a day, unable to get good grades and meeting some free-riders. But I hope that you remember our first day at the Bukit Timah campus when we were waiting for the bus to go to Pulau Ubin for OBS – where we spent the next 3 days knowing and loving one another. I also hope that you remember the last day when we celebrated our departure in the library. We almost tore down the whole campus!

I am sure each and every one of you has his or her own special memories, memories that brought you here today, memories that make us a true fledge SMU graduate.

Perhaps this is the reason why we are so different and special, because of this strong and unique bond amongst all SMU students. If we are going to stay united, I am very sure that we will be a constant threat to others, and we will become the best university.

Friends, since we have already graduated and are no longer students, let us continue to stay united by becoming SMU alumni. Continue to stay close to one another, continue to stay in contact, and continue to be with the SMU Community. Let us proclaim ourselves world-class students yesterday and worthy alumni tomorrow.

Lastly, I would like to thank you for coming into my life, and I hope you thank me too for intruding into your memory.

Thank you.
