In & Around SMU
Evening @ Bras Basah 6th October 2007, 5.00pm
Evening @ Bras Basah, coordinated by the SMU Ambassadors with sponsorship from Office of Advancement & Alumni and SMU Alumni Association, was attended by 45 guests including SMU Ambassadors, Alumni and staff.
A good crowd gathered at the Visitor Centre when registration opened, with half of the guests opting to tour the student hostels.
The visitors comprised mainly parents and new students, with family members joining in the fun. Even grandparents did not want to miss out! The youngest were a pair of twin girls who are the siblings of a Year 1 student. A family even came with their 4 generations in tow! 3 pairs of foreign students with their parents, who were visiting Singapore also joined the event.
The Ambassadors organized guests into 3 separate campus tours which ended at the SOA Seminar Room 2.3. The focus on student life was next as the Ambassadors presented what goes on in a typical SMU student’s seminar session (“We have a Transformer in this seminar room and 8 whiteboards!”). This was followed by Wong Hur Ming (alumni, SMUAA President) who gave an inspiring speech of what a SMU education had done for his career. Julian Wee (alumni) and Danny Ng (alumni, SMUAA Vice President) were next to chip in with their own anecdotes of their SMU experience.
(Editor’s note: The Transformer is a nickname given to the Professor’s desk at the centre of a seminar room which is capable of transforming into several forms). |

All guests were then ushered to the Big Steps to enjoy student performances by the Malay Language Cultural Club (a traditional Malay dance with a modern take) and the Caderas (a salsa dance performance). Coinciding with the breaking of fast during Ramadhan for our muslim friends, refreshments were served as guests mingle. Ford Lai, Kishore Jehan and Keng Zhiyang were spotted amongst the crowd.
We are happy to report that parents were happy with the experience and were glad they got to know the campus.
And our congratulations to the Ambassadors for their outstanding efforts in organising the event and their insightful tours around the campus!
