31 October 2005
Dear Alumni,
It has been a hectic three months at the SMU Alumni Association (SMUAA). Preparations were underway for the Official Launch of the SMUAA, as well as the introduction of the SMUAA membership during the event. The Official Launch was held on 29 October 2005. Prior to the event we received requests to take up membership with the Association – we keep our fingers crossed that these are signs of good things to come for the Association! Look out for photos taken during the event, coming soon in this newsletter!
While preparing for the Official Launch, we at Communiqué pondered about the kind of Alumni that SMU wants. We put forward this question to Clarence Chai, Vice-President of the SMUAA and append his reply as a concluding note to ours.
As we move into the second half of the year, we write a new chapter in the history of SMU. On 31 July 2005, we moved out of our Bukit Timah Campus into the new City Campus. The SMUve event, held over the weekend of 30-31 July 2005 was a celebration of the move into the city. Find out what took place at SMUve in SMU Buzz through our photos and interviews with performers, organizers and undergraduates.
With Commencement 2005, the SMUAA welcomes 520 new graduates to the Association! Commencement 2005 was held on 20 July 2005 and the guest-of-honour was Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education. Communiqué spoke with Lim Ke Xin, Valedictorian for the Class of 2005 – get to know (more about) her in Spotlight!.
We continue to make contact with “SMU expatriates” around the world and in this issue’s Travel Log, we feature Ho Shyn Yee (2000) who is currently with Starwood Asia Pacific Hotels & Resorts. We hope you will enjoy reading her interview as much as we had!
If you had sat out on the recent Let’s Catch-up session that was held on 19 August 2005, SMU Buzz shows you what you’ve missed. This time our regular Alumni meet-up session was held at GV Grand in Great World City, the venue for the exclusive screening of the movie, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, to the Alumni and SMU community. Communiqué reproduces an article on the event from Blurt!.
We have added two new columns to this issue, Career & Work and The Last Page – with the latter featuring Victor Ong (2000) and Anna Lim (2000), one of the first few couples in SMU to tie the knot.
At Communiqué, we constantly strive to develop and improve our content. Do contact us if you would like to give your feedback, submit an article, suggest new story ideas, join the team, or if there’s an initiative that you wish to propose.
Before we conclude, please join us in welcoming Kwek Joo Hwey (2001) to the Editorial team! Also, Frodine Lee (2000), one of our editors, will now manage one of the columns in Communiqué. We wish them a fulfilling relationship with the publication!
Until we meet again in 2006, here are our heartiest greetings for a joyous festive session! Cheers,
The Editor

WHAT KIND OF ALUMNI DOES SMU WANT?
by Clarence Chai, Vice-President of SMUAA
Our graduation marks the beginning rather than the closure of another chapter in our lives.
Graduating from SMU marks the assimilation of a cohort of enterprising and responsible individuals who stand by their principles and lead by example, into the workplace.
We are the ones who will further SMU’s goal to be a world class institution through the establishment of a cohesive network of relationships that bears the SMU identity.
Let us all begin to build up the SMU brand and a SMU culture – and engage in giving back to our alma mater, a gesture that is akin to a selfless flame that ignites more candles.
To a life as enriching as the one we led in SMU. What kind of Alumni do you want? Tell us about it at smuaa@smu.edu.sg .
Comments received will be published in the next issue of Communiqué. |
