Issue 1 || May 2005

Dear Fellow SMU Graduates,

During a brainstorm session for the newsletter, we stumbled upon many issues, including how we can make this newsletter more interesting and more relevant to you, our readers. However, we found ourselves sorely lacking in the creative department (there are only two of us after all) and started to lament the fact that we do not have enough brains on board our team which leads us to our topic for this Editors’ Note – Volunteerism.

What exactly is Volunteerism? Is it about helping out every Sunday at an old folks’ home, going on mission trips to Sri Lanka, contributing a fixed amount of your monthly pay to the Singapore Cancer Society, or much more than that?
We think that the answer is all of the above, and more.

Volunteerism is meaningful when we get to apply our interests and (where possible) our talent to an undertaking. For example, if you have a strong interest in theatre, you would probably want to help out as a backstage, lighting or sound crew of a play or musical, sans payment. Although you are not helping the marginalized in society by doing this, you’re helping to advance the arts cause in Singapore (which is really remains in need of greater support), and indirectly contributing towards creating a more cultured and sophisticated society.

On a smaller scale, we seek people who would like to fan their flames of interest in reporting, writing and photography to join our editorial team. You will be contributing indirectly to the advancement of the SMU Alumni, as a good publication to show for will bode better things to come. (Try to think of the bigger picture here!)

Is your heart beating in sync with ours right now? If it is, we want you! Do drop us an email if you want to contribute to the publication in any way – articles, comments, ideas, suggestions, criticisms and expertise are all welcome.

Cheers and grins,
