At the Alumni Reunion in the City celebrations on 3rd October, the SMU Alumni Association (SMUAA) presented the Honorary Alumnus Award to Justice Andrew Phang for his contributions to the SMU community.

The ceremony was witnessed by SMU management and faculty, as well as alumni who were formally Justice Phang’s students. For alumni in the pioneering classes, it was an occasion that they have been waiting for. Many of them knew Justice Phang when they were undergraduate students and had fond memories of his classes.

Now they are happy and proud to know that Justice Phang is formally part of the SMU alumni community.

Mr Julian Wee, SMUAA Director of Special Projects, read the citation. The award was given out by Mr Wong Hur Ming, President of the SMUAA

This is only the second time that the honorary status award has been presented by the SMUAA. The first honorary award was conferred as a form of appreciation upon Professor Tsui Kai Chong, the founding Dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business

The spirit of gratitude and recognition is a strong pillar of the Award. The SMUAA, in consultation with the university, may confer the award on a deserving non-SMU graduate, if such a candidate is found. The purpose is to show appreciation and recognition to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of SMU and its community

These distinguished individuals typically possess the qualities that SMU alumni wish to uphold. They are usually established in their respective professions such as in the public sector, the business community, sports or the arts
