President's Message

Alumni are as vital to the University as students, faculty, and staff. Our accomplishments as graduates of SMU bear testament to the value and prestige of an SMU education and in time, form part of SMU’s legacy.

The aim of the Alumni Association is to promote the interests of Alumni and to support SMU. We seek to promote lifelong relationships between Alumni and our alma mater, to serve as an advocate and support the objectives of the University. We strive to bring meaningful activities and programs to Alumni, undergraduates and members of the SMU community. These include providing personal and professional development opportunities targeted at Alumni which include career-related initiatives, as well as organising social and recreational activities. We also hope that by building a cohesive Alumni network, we may engage and help SMU by providing opportunities for Alumni to contribute back.

The SMUAA is dedicated to giving back to our alma mater. In 2004, the SMUAA set up a fundraising campaign in to raise funds for the SMU Alumni Scholarship Fund. By July 2007, through the generosity of students, faculty, alumni and the SMU community, the association achieved its endowment target of $200,000. The first Alumni scholarship was awarded on 28 January 2008, with one scholarship being awarded every year – in perpetuity – to help a SMU student in financial need.

Today, our Alumni comprises of future leaders, adventurers and explorers. Many have established themselves in their careers and are poised to take on leadership roles in their organisation and in society. They also possess the willingness to embark on entrepreneurial ventures, and navigate across geographies.

As Alumni, our SMU experience does not have to end upon our graduation. It is by our accomplishments that we can help ensure that new undergraduates will enter an institution that has been strengthened by our collective successes and involvement as an Alumni community. SMU will always be our University – I invite all Alumni to stay connected – and get involved. Start making that difference today.

Yours Sincerely,

Wong Hur Ming (BBM, Graduating Class of 2005)
President
SMU Alumni Association
